Columbus Day

Why do we have Columbus Day? First of all, what is Columbus Day? Columbus day is when we celebrate the date of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Why do we celebrate it when many Native tribes were already civilized in America way beofre the Europeans did? Why don't we have a day for the Native tribes? There are still many arguments.

Personally, I think that we should have both Columbus day and a day for the Native tribes that were already living in America. If it wasn't for Columbus, we wouldn't have had an independent country. If he didn't discover America, which he thought was India, all the Europeans wouldn't have come to America for different reasons, and the Brittish wouldn't have controlled them, and they wouldn't have declared independence. But since all that did happen, and that's why we live here right now, we should have Columbus day.

We should also have a day for those Indian tribes in America because they helped fight many of the wars, despite that many were killed or slaved by the Europeans earlier. Who knows how it could have affected history if it wasn't for those Indians? So I believe that we should celebrate Columbus day, also having a day to celebrate the Indians.

A Crime in Pennsylvania

Today, duuring dinner, my dad started asking us, "Are there violence in your schools?" My siblings and I all wondered why he asked us that, but we said said yes. I told him that there was at least one fight everyday during my lunch period last year, and he asked me "what kind of fights?" so I said, mostly punching, with the security guards breaking them up at the end, as always. We all wondered why he'd asked that question, so one of my brothers asked, "why are you asking us this?" So, he told us the reason, and I was shocked.

He told us that a man in Pennsylvania had shot 10 girls, killing 5 of them. As the police came into the building, he shot himself and died. He didn't tell us the reason, so I looked it up myself. The article that I read, said that he seemed fine the night before he shot 10 girls and himself, and they can't figure out why he did it. The police found out that he harassed young relatives 20 years ago and was dreaming about harassing them again. They predicted that it was building up inside of him.

When I first heard about this, the first thing that popped up in my mind was, I hope that shootings and those fearful things won't happen to my school. Second thing that came up in my mind was, his children. He had 3 children, a 7 year old, 5 year old, and 13 months old. Thinking about how it will affect their lives forever, is a sad story.
