9/28/06 The American Revolution
The American Revolution, which took in place from 1774 through 1783, was not only political, but also social. It changed the relationship between the Common People and the gentry. It also changed the way people saw slaves. It didn't end slavery, but they started tihnking more about it. It also changed the status of women.The American Revolution began in Bunker Hill, where the British attacked on June 13, 1775. About one thousand British and four hundred Americans were killed. After a month later, the Congress sent the Olive Branch Petition to King George III, reaffirming their loyalto him, but the King would not accept. In August, Paliament issued the Prohibitory Act, which declared that all of the colonies in open rebellion and suspending all trade between Britain and the American colonies.
One of the most important battles in the revolution was the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. It was the turning point in the war because the French allied with the colonies. In 1881, the British army marched to Yorktown, and Washington's army, with French combined, assaulted them. On October 17, 1781 the British surrendered. On January 14, 1783, the Congress signed the Treaty of Paris which expanded the boundaries, gave the US their independent, gave unlimited access of the waters to the US fishing ships, US govt. agreed not to interfere with British creditors seeking to collect debts, and the US promised to repay loyalists whose property had been taken by authority during the war.
Women's rights were not given untill the mid-ninteenth century by a rmajor reform movement. They had to wait till 1919 to have the right to vote. The blacks hoped that the America's independence would entitle their own freedom, but many black soldiers were returned to slavery after the war. They were considered patriots, in name only.
