9/19/06 Patriarchal dependence, patronage, political authority
Today I learned about patriarchal dependence, patronage, and political authority.Patriarchal dependence was mostly about the families. Patronage was about the poor and the gentry. And the political authority was about the effect of the patronage.
Men were in charge of the family, like how the gentry took care of the poor like their children. Women had the same rights as the children. Everyone in the family depended on the father since they had no wills of their own.
Nothing happened in society without the patronage. How gentry used their patronage: portectors, creditors, councilor, found jobs for the poors, Godfathers of the family, handed clothing, doctored them, and sponsorship.
No women in society had rights until the American Revolution, even the women in the gentry. American Revolution did not end slavery, but changed the way people thought about slavery.
